The Quinane Family Flyer

A newsletter for descendants and relatives of the Quinane Family

Welcome to the first edition of the Quinane Family Flyer - a newsletter for the decendants of the Quinane Family from the Parishes of and around Borrisoleigh and Upperchurch in Tipperary, Ireland.

For some 17 years now, Cate Richmond, Terry Quinane, Jack Quinane and others have been researching this Quinane family and its history. From this research, we discovered that three or four main Quinane families as well as some single individuals emigrated from Ireland to Australia between 1850 and 1880.

While we have not yet been able to establish how each of these families was related, it is obvious from the records that these families were aware of and kept in contact with each other. Members of the one Quinane family were witnesses to marriages in another Quinane family or godparents, or provided testimony to Coronial inquests, etc.

What started off as three or four couples emmigrating from Ireland to Australia has become after 5 or 6 generations in Australia, many different families in many different locations across mainly New South Wales and Victoria. The vastness of this country has meant that as these different families have changed location to establish themselves, continued contact has at times suffered.

The "Quinane Family Flyer" is a tool that all of us can use to re-establish links or create new links and keep in contact with family members. It is envisaged that the Flyer will be published say every 3 or 4 months and will keep family members up to date with family births, marriages and deaths, news of family members travel/holiday plans and other important events that may interest us. It may also assist family members correespond with each other or perhaps meet meet one another. In addition we will keep you informed of progress with the Family Research.

To be successful the Quinane Family Flyer would need your support in two ways. Firstly, through your contributions, and secondly we would require a small donation of $5.00 per year to pay for postage and printing. However if you have access to the internet you can print the newsletter directly from our home page at http://www.tip.net.au/~ivecm/hist.htm at no cost.

If you would like to receive the Quinane Family Flyer on a regular basis please let us know by writing to Mr Terry Quinane, 48 Wheadon St, Monash, ACT 2904 or by email to ivecm@pcug.org.au. You can also contact Terry by phone on 61 2 6292-1121.

The Early History of the Quinanes in Australia

Patrick Quinane, wife Mary (nee Ryan) and children Jeremiah, Honora and Nancy emigrated to Australia on board the Wanata.

The Wanata departed Liverpool on 10 June 1852 and arrived Melbourne 4 October 1852. During the voyage, Patrick and Mary’s four child, Johanna was born, but unfortunately Honora and Nancy died without seeing Australia.

It would appear that on arrival in Australia, the family moved straight to the Ballarat Gold Fields because their fifth child, Patrick was born on the gold fields in 1854.

To be continued

Daniel Quinane, arrived in Melbourne, Australia on board the "Eastern States" in 1855 and also headed for the Gold Fields around Ballarat. On the 8th April 1856 he married Ellen Stapleton at Eureka, Ballarat.

Daniel and Ellen also moved to the Bellarine Pennisula area and their first son, Michael was born in the area at Drysdale on 9 January 1857. The couple’s last child, Jeremiah was also born at Indented Head on the Bellarine Pennisula in 1865.

The family had moved to the Irrewarra/Colac ares west of Geelong prior to Ellen’s death in 1872. A Magisterial inquiry into her death found that she had died following a kick to the leg by a horse.

To be continued.

Michael Quinane, arrived in Australia in 1879 according to information on his death certificate. This certificate also records his parents as exactly the same Daniel’s parents and from this and records in Ireland it can be shown that they were brothers.

Upon his arrival in Australia, Michael settled in the Irrewarra/Colac area where his older brother Daniel was still living following Ellen’s death. In 1880 Michael married Elizabeth Agnes Sharp. Michael and Elizabeth had 10 children and their decendants are still living in the Irrewarra/Colac area.

To be continued.

Nancy and Judy Quinane departed Plymouth on board the "Phoebe Dunbar" on the 5th September 1854 and arrived in Melbourne on the 25th December 1854. Both travelled as ‘Assisted Passengers" with Nancy going to work for a Mr Browne of Deep Creek and Judy to work for a Mr Armstrong at Oaklands.

No record of Nancy or Judy has been found following their arrival in Australia - any clues would be greatly appreciated!

Peter Quinane arrived in Australia on board the "Champion of the Seas" in September 1865.

John Quinane, wife Mary and daughter Johanna arrived in Australia on board the "City of Melbourne" in May 1865.

John Quinane and his wife Mary arrived in Australia on board the "Everyname" in December 1865.

Your Contributions!

As well at reporting on the interesting things that current family members and their relatives are undertaking, we would also like to hear some stories that relate to past members of the family.

It is likely that many former family members and their relatives were involved in historic or important events within their communities or even comic situations and re-telling these stories will ensure that these memories do not die with the few people that are aware of them and will add another dimension to the knowledge we have of our ancestors and their lives.

So if you are aware of any family related anecdotes please write them down and send them to me so we can all share them!

Family Anecdote

The following story relates to the Michael Quinane, mentioned above in the Quinane Family Flyer who arrived in Australia in 1879.

"Michael Quinane was on his death bed, dying. His wife gathered the family together , all the grandchildren and a few catholic neighbours and as they stood around the bed she covered Michael with a sheet. Neddy Morrissey (a neighbour) said the rosary. When he had finished, Michael pulled the sheet back off his face and said, "You made a bloody good job of that Ned!"

It is believed that all present nearly died of shock as they thought Michael had taken his last breath, but he lived on for days after this had happended."
